The midnight rule feature is designed to handle situations where an employee starts a shift on one day and ends it on the next, crossing midnight in the process.
It ensures that work hours are appropriately allocated to the correct days, preventing discrepancies in time tracking and payroll calculations.
The midnight rule feature typically offers two modes: Over Midnight and Under Midnight.
Over Midnight mode, the system assigns the clock-out event occurring on the next day to the day the employee initially clocked in.
Under Midnight mode, the system assigns the clock-in event from the prior day to the day the employee clocks out.
Enabling the Feature
- Go to Settings
- Click on Time and Attendance Settings
- Under the Clocking Settings section, Enable 'Across midnight clockings'
- Click Save
Configure the feature
- Go to Settings
- Under the Payroll Section, click Work Rules
- Edit the work rule you want to adjust
- Click on the 'Midnight' Tab
- Click Add
- Select which mode you would like to define based on the description above
- Enter a cutoff time - These values vary depending on mode.
Under Midnight values must have brackets around the times in 24 hr format.
Eg. 11pm start is technically (23:00), but to account for any early clocking times we can enter 10:30pm as (22:30).
Over Midnight values must be in addition to the 24 hour standard day.
Eg. 7am finish is technically 24+7 so 31:00. But to account for any late clock outs, we can set the value as (31:30). - Click Done
